Insurance Coverage Question

Do most of the major insurance companies provide coverage for out of country care?

The answer to this question may change over the next year or two

I was just hit with a 24% premium increase for my health insurance for next year after a 16% increase this year. We are at or near the breaking point on insurance affordability in this country and so I believe health plans will start to look to treatment abroad as a much more mainstream. However, health plans arouse so much suspicion from patients and physicians that any move on their part to promote medical travel is likely to generate a backlash.

Depends on the product and

Depends on the product and the company but the answer is "not really." An HMO product would not provide any coverage. A PPO/POS/HSA product may have out-of-network coverage for out of country care but after what is typically a very high deductible. If there is coverage, the patient would have to come out of pocket first and then be subject to the deductible followed by reimbursement based on R&C (reasonable and customary) rates.
