Should I use a medical travel agent?

I’m considering going abroad for a hip replacement. Should I use a medical travel agent or is it better just to plan the trip on my own?

Travel facilitators can save you time, money and headaches

Elise,

Many of our patients come to us in desperation, having found the process of choosing a country, then a hospital, then a surgeon--and then making all the travel arrangements-- too daunting.  A reputable medical travel facilitator has partnerships with facilities that meet or exceed US standards, and after discussing your individual needs and circumstances, will provide you a set of options and detailed background information so you can make an informed decision.

Have you researched hip replacement rather than the more radical hip replacement?  It was only recently approved by the FDA in the US, so it's easier to find skilled surgeons with solid track records in places like India and Belgium.  Here's a good place to start your research if you think you might be a candidate:  http://www.worldmedassist.com/Hip_Resurfacing_Surgery_India.htm

It all depends on how confident you are about travel

I think that the answer to this really depends on how you feel about travelling and also your destination. It also depends largely on the hospital where your operation will be carried out.

For instance, my company assists patients who are travelling to Poland for treatment. Some patients are happy to book their own flight and will only ask us to put them in contact with the most suitable clinic.

Others however may not feel so confident about travelling to another country that they are not familiar with, and where the language is different. In these cases, we can offer services that involve a English speaking representative meeting them at the airport, and where a qualified health-care professional can be on-call 24 hours a day once them move from the hotel to a nearby hotel to recover (depending on their procedure).

If you are thinking about Poland as a destination, please visit www.statmedica.com for further information.

What are the typical fees paid to a medical travel agent?

I'm curious how much I would pay a medical travel agent for each of these extra services.  I can book my own flight and hotel.

Again, it really depends….

Some patients who use StatMedica for assistance while in Poland have very specific needs – for instance, they may require extra care during their recovery period.

It pays to really do your research. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions – and be persistent if you do not feel that you have all the answers that you need, and at the end of the day, select the agent that offers you the most assurance, rather than the one that may be a few pounds or dollars cheaper than the rest.
