Amish as medical tourists
I received this note from a reader and thought it was interesting. Is anyone else aware of this phenomenon?
Just stumbled on your blog. I like watching trains. I do it at Fullerton, California on Saturday nights mostly. My background is Mennonite so I know who/what Amish are. Well, many Amish from the Midwest [Missouri, Iowa, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and even Penn] take the train from Chicago to Fullerton to San Diego to get heath care in Mexico. During the winter it is not unusual to see 2 of 3 couples waiting to get the train to Chicago.
I say hello to them and talk to them and they seem mostly pleased with the care they have gotten. There seem to be a few places around Tijuana that cater to them [Van transportation to the border or the Train station in SD]. The Amish do not fly [and they don't have picture ID anyway and the women use pins to fasten their clothing so they would not pass inspection anyway.] New Homeland Sec/Customs rules requiring passports is going to be a problem really soon. Just thought you might find this interesting.<!--break-->
